INVASIVE EXOTIC SPECIES
To prevent the spread of invasive exotic species, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Natural Resources Canada, via its Canadian Forest Service, have introduced a number of measures. For example, international standards are helping countries that trade in wood products establish strict regulations to prevent the accidental spread of forest and other ecosystem pests.
However, since accidental spread can still occur, insect monitoring is a valuable tool. Once an undesirable species has been introduced into the country, it is important to track its movements, to limit damage.
